Do you pay for the pizza when you eat the pizza?
Treat patient portions of balances just like a restaurant does – they owe the balance, ask to be paid.
Without a doubt, there are people who do not believe they should have to pay for healthcare services. Please understand that the doctors work hard to provide good care to patients and their knowledge and hard work have value. Do not be bashful about asking for monies owed your employer.
Be nice, be matter of fact: “Mr. Jones, your balance is $6,238.12, how would you like to take care of that today?” Then be quiet – silence is your friend in negotiation.
Don’t argue, if the patient cannot pay, try not to offer terms, but if the patients asks help them work out payment terms (or refer them to the employee who handles that task).
Some patients don’t have the ability to pay. Some patients just don’t want to pay. As long as the patient makes a serious attempt to pay or resolve their bill and shows respect for the doctors and staff, we treat them very kindly in our collection process – we don’t send accounts to collections unless the patient is ignoring us.
You don’t work for free, why should your doctor work for free?
